In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly decided to create UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. UN Women became operational on 1 January 2011.
The creation of UN Women took place as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct agencies of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:

In line with the creation of UN Women, the Japan National Committee for UNIFEM changed its name to the Japan National Committee for UN Women. Building on our experiences since its establishment in November 1992, we renew our commitment toward gender equality and women’s empowerment.
We got accredited as Certified Non-Profit Organization (NPO) in June 2008, which enables donations to the Japan National Committee for UN Women as tax-exempted.
